Chapter 302: Escaping
Chapter 302: Escaping
Damian answered a few more questions, and then the officer let him go. There was no way for the officer to know if the things Damian said were true or not. Only an investigation would bring answers.
Elena, Elrandir, Cassia and Nessia were staying at an inn inside the city. It was the best one the city had to offer, which didn’t mean it was luxurious or anything like that. The small city had its limitations.
Once there, Damian looked for them in the inn’s first floor. They were sitting around a table in the corner.
Elena saw Damian approaching their table and she said, "How did it go?"
They were all on the edge. The guards were making them stay inside the city, which would make their lives a lot harder.
"Nothing happened," Damian said as he sat in one of the chairs, "But they are making us stay here, which is fucking lame. What do you think of us leaving during the night?"
Damian didn’t want to lose time. The others felt the same way, but none of them had said something about sneaking away. They were scared of getting caught.
Elena leaned forward and whispered, "Are you sure we can leave without getting caught?"
The most problematic thing was not leaving the city but getting the carriage. The guards were making sure the carriage was still there, and they wouldn’t allow anyone to get away with it.
Well, Damian had a plan to get the carriage, and he was confident they would make it out the city without problems.
So, they spent the day inside the city, visiting a few places and eating good food. When night came, it was time to leave.
The act of leaving the city was not a difficult one. Elrandir had plenty of spells that allowed Elena, Cassia and Nessia leave the city. But they didn’t leave through the front gate. They waited farther from the city, making sure no one saw them there.
"How will Damian get the carriage?" Elena asked.
Elrandir was also curious about it, "I have no idea."
Damian was not using his real appearance. He looked slightly older and had a beard. That’s the appearance Elena and the others knew. So, what he did was change his appearance once again, but this time, to the officer he had met during the morning.
"Officer Kane," one of the guards said as he did a military salute.
"I want to check their carriage," Damian said.
The guards didn’t find it strange, as they were in the mid of an investigation. Damian grabbed the carriage, controlling the horses and going away from the main gate.
That was a little strange. The guards didn’t understand why their ’officer’ had to go away from the main gate to check the carriage, but none of them said a word. They were subordinates after all.
Damian changed back his appearance after getting away from the main gate and then he left. When Elena and the others saw the carriage approaching, they were surprised.
"How did you get it?" Elena asked as she went inside.
"A secret," Damian said.
They all entered the carriage and left. Damian was the first one controlling it.
*
The real Officer Kane went speak with the guards in the main gate, and when they saw him, they were shocked.
"Officer Kane, did you finish checking the carriage?" one of the guards said.
They were confused because Kane came from the main gate, which was impossible. The only way for him to be doing that was if he had circled the city and entered through the other gate.
"What? What do you mean?" Kane said.
The guards explained what happened. Kane yelled at them, "Go see if they are in the tavern. If not, do a search!"
After that, Kane grabbed a horse and went after the carriage.
*
Damian was not stupid. He knew Officer Kane would show up at the main gate and everyone would know something was wrong.
’I don’t know if it will take a long time or not, but I better be prepared,’ thought Damian.
He decided to use secondary roads. The main roads were certainly the ones Kane and the other guards would be looking at, so it was not a good idea to be there.
The only problem was that the secondary roads were all mud, and the roads had too many holes. It was pretty shit to traverse through. Damian had to go really slow or else they could break the wheels of their carriage.
Elrandir knew a lot about the area, so he was the one guiding Damian. He knew exactly what roads to take to get to the city where the port was. But it would still take them a few days.
"Maybe this is a good place to stay the night? I don’t think the guards will find us here," Damian said.
They traveled for one hour through a secondary road. There was nothing there, only the forest.
Damian was confident that the guards would not find them there, but it was always nice to do some precautions to make sure nothing happened.
"I will place a few magical formations to help us," Elrandir said, "But we should still hide the carriage inside the forest."
Damian and Elrandir worked together to find a place to hide the carriage. With the magical formations placed by the mage, it was hard to find them. Elrandir placed a few illusion formations that created an illusory vegetation.
"Even if a guard passes by this road, they will only see vegetation and not our carriage," Elrandir said.
After that, they did the same as all the other camping nights. Build a campfire and cook something to eat before going to bed.
Damian placed his tent outside, and during the night, Elena came to speak with him. Her cheeks were red, and she wanted something from Damian.
’She wants to fuck,’ realized Damian.
"Come in," Damian said.
Elena went inside his tent, lying beside him. She stared at him for a while before moving her lips toward his.
