Chapter 252: Internship
Chapter 252: Internship
"Little Yuan! Long time no see. Are you back for your internship?" Dr. Sun had a patient in his clinic, so he only spoke to Yuan Xiu after taking her pulse.
Yuan Xiu smiled and nodded: "I'm back for an internship. From now on, I'll be working under your guidance."
Dr. Sun pointed at her and said, "It's really different after a few years of schooling; you're much more articulate than before."
He gestured for Yuan Xiu to sit down beside him, saying, "Come here, let me take your pulse and see how well you've learned."
The patient pulled his hand back slightly. "Dr. Sun, this young woman is so young, can she really treat patients?"
"Yes! This is a medical student!"
Upon hearing that the patient was a college student, the patient felt much more at ease, thinking, "A college student! He must know how to treat patients."
Yuan Xiu smiled and sat down, then began to take the patient's pulse.
This wasn't the first time she had treated patients. After entering her junior year of college, the school began arranging for students to conduct free clinics outside the campus. The places they went to were mostly remote rural areas. She had seen at least 180 patients, if not two hundred.
"Auntie, do you often experience chest tightness? Do you often wake up at night? Do you sweat a lot? And is your appetite not very good?"
"Oh my, young lady! You're amazing! You didn't even ask me, and you diagnosed my pulse with just one pulse!" the old woman exclaimed in surprise. "You must be a college student! Those who are taught at universities are truly different!"
Yuan Xiu smiled and withdrew her hand, then looked at her tongue coating. It was too thin and pale, with teeth marks on the edges, and she immediately understood what was going on.
She didn't rush to prescribe a medicine; instead, she looked at Doctor Sun first.
Dr. Sun gestured with his lips, indicating that she should come over.
Yuan Xiu picked up her pen and wrote a prescription while saying, "You have insufficient heart qi and a weak spleen and stomach. You usually overwork yourself, so your qi and blood cannot rise, and you can't sleep soundly."
"I'll prescribe you a week's worth of medicine first. Take it while you're at it. This medicine has the effects of invigorating qi and strengthening the spleen, calming the mind and aiding sleep."
Dr. Sun stood behind her, looking down at the prescription she had written: Codonopsis pilosula 12g, Atractylodes macrocephala 10g, Poria cocos 12g, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (processed) 6g, Angelica sinensis 10g, Paeonia lactiflora 10g, Astragalus membranaceus 15g, Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa 15g, Polygala tenuifolia 6g, Citrus reticulata 6g, fresh ginger 3 slices, and jujube 5 pieces.
Decoct in water and take one dose daily, divided into two warm doses, one in the morning and one in the evening.
Dr. Sun nodded as he looked at the document.
After Yuan Xiu finished writing the prescription, she first handed it to Doctor Sun to see if there were any changes needed.
Dr. Sun waved his hand, "Open it like this, that's good."
Yuan Xiu then handed the prescription to the old woman and instructed her, "Take the medicine warm, don't let it get cold. Try not to get angry or stay up late. You can add some millet and red dates to your porridge to nourish your spleen and stomach. After you finish the seven doses, if you feel less anxious at night, come back again and I will adjust the prescription for you."
As you get older, you have to adjust gradually; you can't rush it.
The old woman took the prescription and went out.
Under Dr. Sun's care, Yuan Xiu saw several more patients, and it wasn't until lunchtime that she finished seeing them all.
She didn't rush to the cafeteria, but went to the pharmacy to find Hao Jia.
When she arrived in the morning, she was busy registering and didn't even get to exchange more than a few words with Hao Jia.
After Yuan Xiu left, the pharmacy hired another person. Last year, Hao Jia gave birth to a son, and Yuan Xiu even gave the child a set of clothes as a full-month gift.
When Yuan Xiu arrived at the pharmacy, Lin Fangmei was also there, checking the prescriptions for the VIP ward with the pharmacist.
"Yuan Xiu!"
Upon seeing Yuan Xiulin, Fang Mei's eyes lit up. She put down the medicine bottle in her hand and grabbed her hand. "I heard a few days ago that our hospital was going to accept about ten interns. I thought you would definitely be among them. Are you the only one here to report for duty today?"
Yuan Xiu smiled and nodded: "Yes, I live nearby. The department said I had to complete the registration within three days, so I came on the first day."
As the two were talking, a nurse came in from the pharmacy. "Head Nurse, the VIP ward..."
The nurse looked up and saw it was Wang Xiaomei.
Yuan Xiu almost didn't recognize her.
The last time I saw her was when I was checking my grades back then.
So many years have passed in the blink of an eye, and she has changed quite a bit. She has gained weight, and her waist is two sizes larger than before.
Upon seeing Yuan Xiu, she didn't react with disdain as before; instead, she greeted her with a smile, "Oh, Yuan Xiu, you're back!"
Yuan Xiu nodded with a smile.
While eating in the cafeteria, Hao Jia chatted with Yuan Xiu, "Don't you think Wang Xiaomei has changed a lot?"
"Yes, I almost didn't recognize you."
"She got married not long after you started school, and she's a mother of two now. People change. When you're young, you can do whatever you want, but after you get married and have kids, and you suffer some losses and get cheated, society teaches you how to be a person, and that bit of arrogance disappears."
Yuan Xiu smiled and said, "And you, have you changed?"
"Of course I've changed too. I'm a mother now. Thinking about it, I should learn more like you. Lin Fangmei came back and became a head nurse. She was promoted to junior nurse and became an administrative cadre at level 22. Her salary is much better than before. Someone like her can apply for an 80-square-meter apartment when she gets married!"
"You're just envious of other people's 80-square-meter houses, aren't you?" Yuan Xiu pointed out incisively.
Hao Jia admitted, "I'm just envious! With my education, I don't know when I'll get promoted, and this salary... Society has changed so much. A relative of mine went to the South twice and he's become so wealthy! He said that making money in the South is like picking up money off the ground. It makes me so envious."
Yuan Xiu said, "It's true that you can make a lot of money in the South, but making money always comes with risks. I've heard that it's very chaotic there. Are you, a woman, really going to follow that example and trade goods between the North and South? Do you know how many tricks there are? Just relax and don't get itchy yet."
For Yuan Xiu, the secure job at the military hospital was far more appealing than making money.
She never thought about how much money she would make in her life; she just wanted to be a doctor with a stable job and dedicate her life to serving patients in the hospital.
With their salaries, as long as they work steadily, they'll almost never have to worry about money in their lives.
Of course, at the right time, one can also use the knowledge gained from the previous life to accumulate some wealth for the two children.
Hao Jia was a lazy person by nature. She was itching to do it, but she wouldn't dare to actually do what her relative did and go to great lengths to buy and sell goods from all over the country.
"If you really want to learn, there are still night schools, right? You can still benefit from that," Yuan Xiu advised.
Hao Jia: "Where would I find the time?"
When it comes to studying, Hao Jia starts to back down again.
Yuan Xiu: How has your personality changed? It hasn't changed at all.
"You haven't changed much," Hao Jia said, changing the subject back to their earlier topic. "You're still the same as before, even more beautiful!"
Yuan Xiu laughed and said, "Are you referring to her personality or her appearance? Anyway, thank you for your compliment!"
