Chapter 285: Arresting the Enemy Agent Behind the Silk Shop
Chapter 285: Arresting the Enemy Agent Behind the Silk Shop
As Zhang Lei was leaving the house, he looked up and suddenly realized: this courtyard was actually the backyard of Chen Xueru's silk shop! Wasn't that two-story building in front Chen Xueru's residence?
He suddenly remembered that the original story did mention an enemy agent hiding near Chen Xueru's house, but he couldn't recall the exact time. Unexpectedly, by some twist of fate, he had found the hideout first! Zhang Lei's palms were sweating with excitement, but then he thought that the enemy agent hadn't returned yet, so he had to quickly restore the scene to its original state, leaving no trace.
He quickly tidied everything back to its original state before quietly slipping out of the courtyard. Just as he reached the entrance of the silk shop, he saw Chen Xueru walking out with a sullen face and a huff, clearly still angry about what had just happened.
Zhang Lei panicked and immediately hid behind a nearby tree. If he went out now, she would definitely catch him and interrogate him, but he couldn't just ignore it because the enemy agents might come back at any time—Chen Xueru ran a shop here, and what if the enemy agents were desperate and hurt her?
After hesitating for a moment, Zhang Lei still gritted his teeth and went out.
When Chen Xueru saw him, her face darkened even more. She gritted her teeth and said, "Running? Weren't you running pretty fast just now? Why did you stop?"
Zhang Lei smiled awkwardly and quickly stepped forward to pull her back: "Xue Ru, I have something urgent to tell you. Come with me."
"What can't we say here? Why are you being so secretive?" Chen Xueru shook off his hand, her face full of suspicion. "Are you trying to take advantage of me again?"
Zhang Lei felt wronged, but he couldn't say it in public, so he could only insist firmly: "Stop talking nonsense and come with me quickly, or it will be too late."
His tone was unusually serious, and Chen Xueru was stunned for a moment. Unconsciously, she followed him to a secluded spot deep in the alley.
Zhang Lei stopped, turned to look at her, and said in a deep voice, "Xue Ru, don't be afraid of what I'm about to say."
Chen Xueru's heart leaped into her throat, and she nervously gripped the hem of her clothes: "What happened? Tell me."
Zhang Lei recounted in detail how he discovered the enemy spy hideout in his backyard. Upon hearing this, Chen Xueru's face turned deathly pale, and she shook her head repeatedly: "Really? You didn't see wrong?"
"Absolutely true." Zhang Lei nodded. "Go to the police station right now and report it to them. Ask them to send plainclothes officers over, but don't alert them. I'll stay here and keep an eye on when the enemy agents return."
Seeing his earnest gaze, Chen Xueru instantly calmed down and nodded vigorously, "Okay! I'll go right away, be careful!"
After saying that, she turned and ran towards the police station, her steps quick.
Zhang Lei hid in a corner at the entrance of the alley, staring intently at the gate of the enemy agent's house. Before long, he saw a man sneaking over, carrying a cloth bag in his hand. As he walked, he kept looking back warily. It was the same guy who had been peeking around—this was the enemy agent, who looked like he had just returned from a rendezvous.
Zhang Lei was engrossed in his reading when he was suddenly patted on the back. Startled, he froze, almost throwing himself over his shoulder. Turning around, he saw Chen Xueru, followed by several plainclothes police officers.
"You've finally arrived!" Zhang Lei breathed a sigh of relief and immediately pulled the police captain aside, whispering the characteristics and location of the enemy agent, as well as what he had just seen the captain go to make contact with.
The captain frowned, sized him up, and questioned, "You're convinced he's an enemy agent just because he's acting suspiciously?"
"Prevention is better than cure!" Zhang Lei said urgently. "Who goes out looking around suspiciously? I see that cloth bag in his hand; it's definitely for making a rendezvous. If we're late, he'll run away!"
The captain thought it made sense; it was better to be safe than sorry with enemy agents. He immediately ordered, "Everyone, follow me! Set up a perimeter!"
Several plainclothes policemen quietly circled around to the outside of the enemy agent's house, and one of them went up and knocked on the door.
The enemy agent inside the house immediately became alert upon hearing the knock and asked in a low voice, "Who is it?"
The plainclothes police officer mimicked the tone of the neighborhood committee: "We're from the neighborhood committee, here to conduct a population survey and ask if any outsiders have been living here recently."
The enemy agent breathed a sigh of relief, opened the door a crack, and was about to speak when several policemen rushed in and shoved him to the ground.
"Let me go! I'm a law-abiding citizen! What right do you have to arrest me!" The enemy agent struggled desperately, shouting that he was innocent.
The captain barked, "Go in and search!"
Upon hearing this, the enemy agent's eyes instantly turned fierce—he actually pulled out the pistol from his crotch!
"Watch out!" Zhang Lei shouted quickly.
Everyone was stunned; no one had expected the enemy agent to hide a gun in such a place. The agent pulled the trigger, aiming directly at Zhang Lei and Chen Xueru!
"What the hell!" Zhang Lei cursed, then pounced on Chen Xueru and pinned her down.
"Bang?"
No gunshot rang out, and the expected pain didn't come. The enemy agent pulled the trigger a few more times, but the gun only made a "click" sound—it jammed!
Zhang Lei broke out in a cold sweat instantly, only then remembering that he had deliberately jammed the pistol before leaving.
Taking advantage of the enemy agent's momentary lapse in concentration, the police reacted, swarmed forward, pinned him down, and seized his gun.
Zhang Lei finally released Chen Xueru and got up from the ground. Chen Xueru also propped herself up and glared at him irritably: "Aren't you getting up? How long are you planning to keep pressing on me? Haven't you had enough?"
Zhang Lei scratched his head awkwardly, quickly helped her up, and even patted the dirt off her body: "I was just afraid you'd get hurt."
Chen Xueru touched the back of her head, then suddenly cried out, her face changing drastically: "It's bleeding!"
Zhang Lei rushed over to check and found it was just a minor bump. He quickly apologized, "I'm so sorry, I was in such a hurry."
Seeing his nervous expression, Chen Xueru's anger subsided considerably, and she shook her head: "It's not your fault."
The police captain walked over, looking apologetic: "Comrade, I'm sorry, we didn't think things through. We didn't expect the enemy to be so cunning."
"It's alright, it's alright, as long as the person has been caught," Zhang Lei waved his hand and laughed.
Soon, the police found a radio, a codebook, and some receipts that Zhang Lei hadn't had time to collect in the house. Upon seeing this evidence, the enemy agent collapsed to the ground, utterly devastated.
Zhang Lei strode over and, taking advantage of a moment when no one was looking, reached out and with a "crack," dislocated the enemy agent's jaw.
Everyone was stunned, their faces filled with astonishment. Zhang Lei smiled awkwardly and explained, "I heard that enemy agents like to hide poison sacs in their teeth, for fear that they might bite their tongues and commit suicide."
The captain immediately realized what was happening and quickly ordered the officers to examine the enemy agent's teeth. Sure enough, they found the venom sac in the innermost molar. He hurriedly thanked Zhang Lei, "Thanks to you, otherwise it would have been a major disaster."
Zhang Lei waved his hand, but inwardly he breathed a sigh of relief—thankfully he had this backup plan, otherwise this enemy agent might have really committed suicide.
At this moment, Chen Xueru also breathed a sigh of relief, touched the small wound on the back of her head, and confirmed that it was just a superficial injury before she felt at ease.
The police captain and his men were about to take the enemy agent away, but the agent's jaw had been dislocated, and he could only shout "Aba aba" without being able to speak.
Chen Xueru was furious at the arrogant enemy agent. She stepped forward, kicked him hard in the groin, and yelled, "You dare point a gun at me? I'll kick you to death!"
Looking at the fierce Chen Xueru, everyone instinctively squeezed their legs together, their faces filled with lingering fear. Zhang Lei couldn't help but think to himself: This woman is truly fierce, but dealing with enemy agents is certainly satisfying.
The enemy agent convulsed in pain, his cries of "Aba!" growing louder. Helpless, Zhang Lei reached out and put his chin back in place.
Once the enemy agent recovered, he glared at Chen Xueru and Zhang Lei and cursed viciously, "You just wait! When I get out of here, I'll kill you both!"
